Alumni – Professional Baseball

The Blaze organization is extremely proud to have had 29 players drafted by MLB clubs since 2001, more than any other high school or club team in Canada. This speaks loudly to the Blaze history of the ongoing development of high caliber players and the program’s reputation for excellence.

Ex Blaze Scott Mathieson named Player of the Month

Closer Scott Mathieson has been named minor league pitcher of the month

“He might be as good a power reliever as there is right now in minor-league baseball,” Phillies Asst GM Chuck LaMar said.

“He’s getting closer and closer to being ready to help the big-league club,” LaMar said. “I think at some time in the near future you’ll see him on the major-league staff.”Drafted in 2002, Mathieson is know as one of the hardest throwers in baseball touching 101 on occasion and sitting at 94-99. Entering play tonight, he has 29 strikeouts in 25.2 innings, averaging 10.2 SO/9.0 innings

Ex Blaze Jordan Lennerton named Player of the Week

Lennerton’s hot bat was recognized as he received Midwest League player of the week honors Wednesday.
Lennerton, who carried a team-high 11-game hitting streak into Wednesday’s game against the Burlington Bees, led the league last week with a .583 batting average, including five doubles.
He also registered a .633 on-base percentage and a .792 slugging percentage.
Lennerton, a native of Langley, British Columbia, and 33rd-round pick out of Oregon State in 2008, has raised his average to a team-high .312.

—–LHP JAKE ELIOPOLOUS DRAFTED IN THE SECOND ROUND 68th overall by the Toronto Blue Jays.  Jake joined and played for the Blaze in Arizona during our annual spring tour in March and became a close friend of the team. Congratulations to Jake and his family!

—–SS WES DARVILL DRAFTED IN THE FIFTH ROUND 170h overall by the Chicago Cubs. Wes has played since he was 14 years old for the Jr Blaze and Sr Blaze as well as the Canadian Jr National team. His hard work has payed off and we congratulate Wes, Mike and Rosalea and brother Tom. Good things do happen to good people!

—–LHP JON HESKETH DRAFTED IN THE TWENTIETH ROUND 593rd overall by the Seattle Mariners. Jon played though the Blaze system from age 14, has been drafted twice before and played last season at Univ of New Mexico. Congratulations to Jon, Terry, Bonnie and family!

-Ex Blaze Stosh Wawrzasek picked up his second win in as many outings with four strong relief innings, striking out 4 and allowing no runs to go 2-0 .000 era to start the season for the Maryvale Brewers of the Arizona League. Good job Stosh!

MLB FUTURES GAME

Former Blaze players Brett Lawrie and of Tyson Gillies have been named to the 2009 MLB Futures Game World rosters to be played at the MLB All Star game in St Louis Busch Stadium. Congratulations!

BRETT LAWRIE – JNT – MVP

Former Langley Blaze (2008) and first round MLB (16th overall) draft pick, earned the Junior National Team MVP award, sponsored by Disney’s Wide World of Sports, for the second time in three years. Lawrie was the offensive key cog of the Junior National Team at the World Junior Championship in Edmonton, winning the Triple Crown of the tournament batting .469 with three home runs and 16 RBI. He also displayed his power during the Dominican Summer Camp, hitting five home runs in a doubleheader against the Seattle Mariners Dominican team.
